Tactical Alert. Trekkies for John F. Kerry!
As Trekkies we share Gene Roddenberry's dream of a global civilisation in which diverse ideas and life forms
are no longer a cause for war but have become the reason for individual and collective advancement. In 2004
earth time we are further away from this dream than many would have thought after the fall of the Berlin
wall. In this light the coming elections of the president of the United States of America could be an
important way mark on the long road to realising the dream of a Federation of the Planet Earth.
The Citizens of the United States of America will be electing their president on November 2nd and in this
will be making a decision that concerns many people on this planet. With war, terror and global problems in
ecological, medical, economical and social matters, much depends on the willingness of the remaining
"superpower" to take on the responsibility for its political and economical importance. Time has long come
for an America that is thinking and acting globally. An America, that can see solving global problems as
an essential interest of the US citizens. Nevertheless, in the last four years we have seen an US
administration that has been acting highly irresponsible: for example by blocking the Kyoto protocol, by
neglecting the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians und finally by an invasion and occupation of
Iraq against the will of the international community which lured this country and the occupation troops led
by the US on to predicted chaos. And while even the US inspectors in the end confirmed that Iraq under
Saddam Hussein did not have a program for the production of weapons of mass destruction, President George W.
Bush is not able to recognise his mistakes and to adopt another curse of action.
John Kerry however promises the many people on this planet who will not have a choice on 2nd November to
make for an America that can again be respected. Apart from a return to cooperative politics Kerry announced
also an enlargement of the standing troops of the US-Army in case of an election victory. Kerry therefore
has drawn insufficient conclusions from the 9/11 terror attacks and the events following them: peace in Iraq
and the war against terrorism cannot be won by invasion-troops but by a strong international community! To
prevent new generations of terrorists growing out of poverty and political oppression the struggle
has to be pushed with the means of diplomacy and development cooperation. In connection with the war on
Vietnam, John Kerry has already shown that he is able to change from a soldier to a man of peace. By
changing from a supporter of the war on Iraq to a mentor of a self-determined Iraq and of the
Israeli-Palestinian peace process, a President Kerry could effectively win America's respect in the
world.
At the beginning of the 21. century the intelligent life forms on this planet face a decision: either to
fearfully cling to the own beliefs and fight others as dangerous aliens or to curiously and respectfully
learn to know the counterpart and together find solutions for mutual problems. Especially because only a
long and controversial process of doubts, new securities, set-backs, but also big and small progresses can
lead to a global federation, only John F. Kerry can be the front man in the White House for now and the
coming four years. This is reason enough for us to call for a tactical alert in the trekkie fandom around
the globe and to symbolically take part in the presidential elections: we vote for Kerry, we vote for the
option to make possible a timeline with an Federation of the Planet Earth!
